Amex Business Gold: Is the $375 Fee Still Worth It?
TL;DR
FedEx leaves the Business Gold's $240 Flexible Business Credit on October 1, 2026. The credit itself stays at $240 a year, but from that date you can only fill it at Grubhub and office supply stores. The $375 annual fee still clears comfortably for most businesses, because any two of the card's four statement credits cover it with one exception.
What changed
The Business Gold carries a Flexible Business Credit worth up to $240 a year, paid as up to $20 in statement credits each month. Through September 30, 2026, three merchant categories fill it: FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores. FedEx comes off the list on October 1, 2026.
The dollar amount does not shrink. The credit remains $240 a year at $20 a month. What narrows is the set of places you can spend to earn it, from three categories to two. If your business has been letting a shipping label or two absorb the $20 each month, that is the habit that breaks in seven weeks.
Who this affects
Every Business Gold holder enrolled in the Flexible Business Credit, and anyone with a renewal date coming up who is weighing the $375.
The card's other three statement credits are unchanged: up to $300 a calendar year on U.S. ChatGPT Business subscriptions, up to $150 a calendar year on U.S. Squarespace purchases, and up to $12.95 a month toward a Walmart+ membership, which is $155.40 across twelve months. Add all four together and the card puts up to $845.40 a year on the table against a $375 fee.
That headline number is not the useful one. Every credit is locked to a merchant, so the only question that matters is how many of the four your business already spends money at. Run the pairs and the answer gets simple. Any two of the four credits beat the fee, with a single exception:
- Flexible Business Credit plus ChatGPT: $540
- Flexible Business Credit plus Walmart+: $395.40
- Flexible Business Credit plus Squarespace: $390
- ChatGPT plus Walmart+: $455.40
- ChatGPT plus Squarespace: $450
- Squarespace plus Walmart+: $305.40
Only that last pair falls short, and it falls short by $69.60. If you use the ChatGPT credit or the Flexible Business Credit and one other, the fee is already paid before you count a single point.
The ChatGPT credit is the one most likely to be doing quiet work. ChatGPT Business runs $20 per user per month according to the issuer's partner materials, so a two-seat subscription hits the $300 cap over a calendar year, and the credit covers the whole thing.
Then there is the earning, which is the reason to hold this card rather than a cheaper one. The Business Gold pays 4X Membership Rewards points on the top two eligible categories where your business spends the most each billing cycle, chosen from U.S. media advertising, U.S. electronic goods, software and cloud purchases, U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, transit, and monthly U.S. wireless telephone service. That 4X applies to the first $150,000 in combined purchases from those categories each calendar year, then drops to 1X. A business running $4,000 a month through its top two categories earns 192,000 points a year. A business that reaches the cap earns 600,000.
What to do about it
Check your enrollment first. The Flexible Business Credit, the ChatGPT credit, and the Squarespace credit all require enrollment, and an unenrolled credit pays nothing. The Walmart+ credit only requires that you pay the membership with the card.
If FedEx has been your $20 a month, pick the replacement now rather than in October. Grubhub and office supply stores are what remain, and a monthly credit that goes unused does not roll forward.
Then count honestly. Which of the four credits will your business actually trigger in a normal year? Two is the number that settles the fee question, unless your two are Squarespace and Walmart+.
The fine print
The ChatGPT and Squarespace credits reset by calendar year. The Flexible Business Credit is monthly at $20 and does not accumulate, so a skipped month is gone. The 4X rate is capped at $150,000 in combined purchases across your top two categories per calendar year, and everything past that earns 1X. Flights and pre-paid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com earn 3X. Everything else earns 1X. Employee cards are $95 each, up to 99 cards.
The card also carries cell phone protection up to $800 per claim with a $50 deductible and a two-claim limit per 12 months, trip delay coverage up to $300 per trip for delays over 12 hours, and purchase protection up to $1,000 per purchase and $50,000 per account per calendar year.
